Ries Joins Sanitation Authority Board

New member has experience upgrading wastewater treatment plants in region

The Alexandria Sanitation Authority announced Matthew Ries as the newest member of its board of directors in a press release earlier this week.

Ries currently serves as the managing director of technical and educational programs with the Water Environment Federation, a non-profit technical organization based in Alexandria.

Prior to joining WEF, Ries was an engineering consultant to several municipalities, including Arlington County, Fairfax County and the District of Columbia. In this role, he helped upgrade several wastewater treatment plants in the face of new environmental regulations.

“Through my work at WEF, I have had the privilege of partnering with ASA on numerous projects over the years,” Ries said in the press release. “I am honored to be selected as a new board member and view it as another opportunity to follow my own interest in water issues that I have had since I was a child.”

Ries replaces Jim Larrison on the ASA board. Larrison, who served on the board since 2008, recently moved to Chicago.

During the board’s July meeting, David Nichols was elected by the board to assume Larrison’s role as vice chair.

“We are delighted to have a long time Alexandria resident join our board,” Board Chairman Tom Van Wagner said in the release. “Mr. Ries is continuing a trend here where we are seeing industry specific skill sets join the team. Our board has some very sophisticated sets of requirements, and I look forward to the specialized experience he brings to ASA.”
