Roaches And Rodent Droppings At Restaurant Near Del Ray

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria regularly conducts health inspections for local restaurants. The frequency of inspections on the type of food served and how it is prepared.

“In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations,” states the Virginia Department of Health’s website.

Here are some of the violations from recent inspections in July. Among the violations were cockroaches and rodent droppings found at Marcela's Bakery near Del Ray. Also included are restaurants that passed inspections with no violations, like the newly-reopened Al's Steak House.

violations: employee not washing hands after activity that could contaminate food, shelving racks rusted and in need of cleaning

South Block: 3051 Mt Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22305, last inspection: July 25 (follow up)

violations: employee wearing jewelry while prepping food, cutting board not able to be properly sanitized

Tsim Yung Chinese Restaurant: 2603 Mt. Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301, last inspection: July 18

violations: raw meat stored over vegetables, uncovered food, storage racks in need of cleaning, screen door has gaps that could allow pests to enter, kitchen and back storage areas in need of cleaning
