Ting Internet Debuts In Limited Part Of Alexandria

Ting Internet has launched in select areas of Alexandria, adding more competition for internet service in the city.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Comcast is no longer the sole provider of internet in Alexandria as more internet providers are being added. Ting Internet announced Tuesday it has introduced fiber internet service in select areas of Alexandria with plans to expand to more areas of the city.

Ting Internet, a company founded in Charlottesville in 2015, was approved to provide citywide internet service by Alexandria City Council in 2022. Construction of the fiber infrastructure underground began in September 2022 after the approval.

A spokesperson for Ting Internet said the fiber internet is initially available to hundreds of homes in the Del Ray neighborhood. The internet provider plans to expand across Alexandria in the coming years with full access expected by 2025. Ting Internet estimates it can serve over 90,000 addresses.

As part of Ting's agreement with the city government, residents who qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program can get gigabit symmetrical Internet at no cost to them, including 4,000 affordable housing units. Those eligible residents will also receive a Eero router rental at no charge and can buy a $100 Lenovo tablet for a one-time cost of $20 plus tax.

"We believe in making the Internet better, and that means improving Internet access and Internet choice for the communities in which we operate," said Elliot Noss, CEO of Tucows and Ting Internet. "Offering symmetrical gigabit fiber to the home at no cost for those who qualify for the ACP can make a real tangible difference, and this is just the beginning."

The digital equity and inclusion program coordinated by Ting and the city will also provide free symmetrical gigabit Internet to local nonprofits, parks and farmers markets chosen by the city government.

"Not only has Ting brought a truly competitive broadband marketplace to our city, the added resource of no-cost accessibility for those who qualify for this program can be a gamechanger for thousands of Alexandrians," said Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson in a statement. "We know, as city leaders, we must continue to identify partners and solutions that not only make good 'business sense' but also make change possible for the people and businesses we serve."

Ting operates in seven states across the U.S.

Verizon Fios broadband internet service is also being introduced to the city. In spring 2022, Verizon began updating its lines to fiber optic cable to offer its Fios internet and phone services.
