Two Alexandria Post Offices Under Review

Del Ray and Seminary locations could close

Two post offices in the City of Alexandria are under review for potential closure, according to a list released Tuesday by the U.S. Postal Service.

The Mt. Vernon Avenue post office in Del Ray and the office in the Virginia Theological Seminary are the two locations under consideration.

In a release Tuesday, the United States Postal Service said it is “right-sizing its expansive retail network” of nearly 32,000 offices because the need for that many locations has diminished as customers conduct their postal business online or elsewhere.

Approximately 3,700 offices around the country will be studied, according to the release.

USPS spokesperson Freda Sauter said the initial study should take 60 days, with the entire project expected to take 120 days.

“Prior to any decision, we’re going to have a community meeting to listen to our customers comments and questions,” Sauter said.

Sauter said the offices selected for review were determined by their proximity to other post offices and non-USPS facilities that sell stamps and other postal products. Customer demand, insufficient workload, revenue and expenses will also be taken into account during the study.

Dennis Voorhees, manager of postal operations in Virginia, said the goal of the study is to determine what offices can “realistically” be done away with.

Voorhees said once an office has been identified for closure, it would take “another two months before a post office branch would be closed.”
