ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria City Public Schools will close school buildings and implement virtual learning for a second day Tuesday due to winter weather.

ACPS school buildings and offices will close due to continued winter weather conditions. Virtual learning on snow days is part of the new ACPS policy for inclement weather aimed at providing continuity of learning. Students are expected to bring home computers or devices and other materials each school day in case schools close for inclement weather.

Class times will feature teacher-led office hours and asynchronous learning without live instruction. Attendance will be tracked as students log in to Canvas and Clever. No new content will be taught, and grades will not be assigned on virtual learning days.

For elementary schools, the main learning tools are curriculum-based apps and computer-adaptive programs students frequently use at school. At the start of each day, teachers hold office hours from 30 to 60 minutes. While no new content will be taught, students can complete projects and assignments already in progress as shown on Canvas and Clever. Students do not need to follow a time schedule, but ACPS aims to have two hours of asynchronous learning in grades Pre-K to 1 and up to four hours in grades 2 to 5.

Middle schools will follow the normal schedule for asynchronous work and teacher office hours. Blocks of time will be asynchronous with teachers available during the block for hours and student support during the first 45 minutes of each class. Zoom links for office hours will be available from each teacher's Canvas page. Elective teachers will have office hours for the first 20 minutes of class, and advisory teachers will be available during the first 15 minutes of the advisory period to assist students.
