ALEXANDRIA, VA — On Monday, residents and organizations in Alexandria will take a moment to honor the life and legacy of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.

The City of Alexandria will recognize the holiday with a virtual program called "It Starts With Me: Shifting Priorities to Build the Beloved Community." The program from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Planning Committee will premiere Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. on the city’s website, social media and cable channels 70/1084. The program will feature remarks from Virginia U.S. Senator Mark Warner, Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson and retiring City Manager Mark Jinks, as well as "It Starts With Me: A Call to Action" by former Councimember Del Pepper, performances and musical selections by local youth and the Alexandria City High School Orchestra.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17 is a federally-observed day of service. Residents can find volunteer opportunities any time at www.volunteeralexandria.org.

Another way to mark the holiday is visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in DC. The memorial is located near the Tidal Basin at 1964 Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC.

As a federal holiday, MLK Day could also affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Alexandria.

Before you head out, here’s a roundup of what’s open and what’s closed on Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Alexandria:

City of Alexandria government offices: City government offices are closed on Jan. 17.

Alexandria City Public Schools: All schools and offices will be closed on Jan. 17.

Courts: The Fairfax County General District Court, Circuit Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court will be closed on Jan. 17.

Animal Welfare League of Alexandria: On Jan. 17, the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (4101 Eisenhower Ave.) will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. by appointment only, for virtual and in-shelter animal visiting opportunities. To make an appointment, visit visit AlexandriaAnimals.org/Adopt-by-Appointment. For animal emergencies or wildlife concerns, call 703-746-4444.

DASH Bus: The Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) bus service will operate on a Saturday schedule on Jan. 17. The free King Street Trolley will operate from King Street Metro to Alexandria City Hall every 15 minutes, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Visit dashbus.com for more information.

Health facilities: Alexandria Health Department services at 4480 King St.; the Flora Krause Casey Health Center (1200 N. Howard St.); and the Teen Wellness Center (3330 King St.) will be closed on Jan. 17.

Historic Alexandria: On Jan. 17, the Stabler–Leadbeater Apothecary Museum (105–107 S. Fairfax St.) will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All other City of Alexandria museums will be closed. For more information, visit www.alexandriava.gov/Historic.

Hotlines: All emergency hotlines operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including the child protective services hotline at 703-746-5800 or state hotline at 1-800-552-7096; the domestic violence hotline at 703-746-4911; the emergency services for mental health or substance abuse crisis hotline at 703-746-3401; the adult protective services hotline at 1-888-832-3858 or APS State Hotline at 1-888-832-3858; the suicide prevention hotline at 703-527-4077; and the sexual assault hotline at 703-683-7273.

Impound facility: The city’s impound facility (5249 Eisenhower Ave.) will be closed on Jan. 17. The impound facility is closed every Saturday and Sunday, as well as on all observed city holidays. Fees accrue while the facility is closed Saturdays and Sundays but will not accrue on holidays.

Libraries: All Alexandria Library branches and the Alexandria Law Library (520 King St.) will be closed on Jan. 17.

Metro: Metrorail and Metrobus typically run on a Saturday schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Due to the continued impacts of the derailment and 7000-series investigation, Metrorail service continues to be reduced. Visit www.wmata.com/schedules/timetables for more information.

Parking: On Jan. 17, the Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces, residential permit parking districts and other areas with signed parking time limits. This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no-parking zones, loading zones or spaces for persons with disabilities). Temporary no-parking signs will be enforced on Jan. 17.

Post offices: Closed on Jan. 17.

Recreation, nature and art centers: On Jan. 17, Chinquapin Park Recreation Center & Aquatics Facility (3210 King St.), Charles Houston Recreation Center (901 Wythe St.) and Patrick Henry Recreation Center (4653 Taney Ave.) will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Torpedo Factory Art Center will be open Sunday, Jan. 16 (from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and closed Monday, Jan. 17. All other recreation, nature and art centers will be closed.

Trash and recycling: Residential refuse and recycling will not be collected Jan. 17. Collection services will be delayed by one day that week: Monday’s collection will be on Tuesday; Tuesday’s collection will be on Wednesday; Wednesday’s collection will be on Thursday; and Thursday’s collection will be on Friday. The Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Collections Drop-off Center (3224 Colvin St.) will be closed on Jan. 17. Visit the Resource Recovery web page for more information.

Virginia DMV: All DMV customer service centers will be closed Jan. 17, including 2681 Mill Rd.

Virginia Railway Express: VRE does not operate on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
