When To Trick Or Treat In Alexandria 2022; Trunk Or Treat Events

Little ghouls and goblins will wander their neighborhoods for candy on the night of trick-or-treat, and other children's events are planned.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — It's that time of year when children will show up at doorsteps, hoping to wow residents with their costumes in exchange for candy. In the City of Alexandria, trick-or-treat is expected on Monday, Oct. 31.

The Alexandria does not set a specific date for trick-or-treat, so it is expected to happen the evening of Oct. 31. If you live in Fairfax County, trick-or-treat is also on Oct. 31 and is not set by the county government. Some homeowners associations or apartment complexes may set different times for trick-or-treat.

To prepare for trick-or-treat, the City of Alexandria offers the following safety tips:

For trick-or-treaters

  • Visit only well-lit houses and remain on porches rather than entering houses.
  • Travel in small groups and be accompanied by an adult.
  • Know your phone number and carry cell phones for emergency telephone calls.
  • Have names and addresses attached to their costumes.
  • Use flashlights, stay on sidewalks, and avoid crossing yards.
  • Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.
  • Cross streets at the corner, use crosswalks and do not cross between parked cars.
  • Stop at all corners and stay together in a group before crossing.
  • Wear clothing that is bright, reflective, and flame retardant.
  • Use costume knives and swords that are flexible, not rigid or sharp.
  • Consider using face paint instead of masks, which can obstruct a child's vision.
  • Avoid wearing hats that will slide over their eyes.
  • Avoid wearing long, baggy, or loose costumes or oversized shoes to prevent tripping.
  • Bring treats home before eating them so parents can inspect them.
