I heard a line on television that said an angel is missing from Heaven. I would like to add to that line and say where is this angel, is he/she in our midst, do we know him/her or what is going on? There was a television show in 1994 and it lasted about nine years and starred Della Reese and Roma Downey as part of a trio of angels sent down to earth to mingle with the real people. It was a cute show and the angels helped people in need of advice and other things. It was called Touched By An Angel and became a big hit. At first, people shied away from its theme thinking it tacky; but the sweetness of the words and the performances of the stars gave it a type of reality long before reality shows became big hits. Some people collect teddy bears even at advanced ages ( I do), some people collect teacups ( I did for a while) some people collect sports memorabilia, some folks collect antiques and my little almost five year old grand, grand niece loves to buy different toothbrushes. Each person or child has their reason for collecting and enjoying what they like. I also like to collect angels. I have a heavy glass angel sitting on our bedroom dresser. I feel that she looks over us at night while we sleep. I have an angel key chain and several porcelain angel statues doing various things. One is pouring something into a bowl; another is besides a bin of flowers. They are pretty art pieces and why I love angels is because a customer who came into our pharmacy use to call me angel when I worked there several days a week. He was an old man to me at that time, he was around sixty and I was around forty, so to me he was a sweet old man who referred to me as angel. Just a passing remark got me into angels and the meaning of angels. John Calvin said “angels are the dispensers and administrators of the Divine beneficence toward us.” I heard this line on a show and it was “only one suitcase needed into a new life, no need to take much more. “From those two lines, you could merge them into one. If we want to start a new life, a new job, a new relationship, perhaps we need only one suitcase to travel with going there. Also perhaps, we could have an angel be a benefactor to us. This angel could be anyone we know, anyone we are related to or even someone we work with daily. However, perhaps we could be the reverse and become an angel our self to someone who needs one financially or emotionally. My friends Steven Behr and his student Ikuko of Washington State left today, to visit Hawaii where he has gone for the previous 32 years. Once there, they give ballroom dancing exhibition dances and best of all they teach ballroom dance to the people there in different parts of Hawaii. This is their mitzvah (good deed) and the trip is long and tiring and both are super seniors and enjoy the time spent there which is usually two weeks. They email me from there about their activities and happiness they spread teaching and the joy they receive from the people who come to their dancing events. They are Senior Angels spreading their love of ballroom dance to people who are eager for their arrival. His previous partner Mary passed on several years ago and Ikuko is now his partner. Mom use to work at Sinai Hospital and she worked at first in the well-baby clinic and then she transferred to the gift shop. She was a volunteer and gave of her time one day a week and the only pay she received was her bus fare to and fro and a free lunch. She would put on her yellow volunteer uniform with its white blouse and her name tag attached to her shirt. She was proud to do this for strangers and for the hospital and she was rewarded once for her many hours of volunteer activities with a gold pin. She loved that pin for what it stood for. I use to call her my Sinai angel for giving of her time. Others are angels in other ways, some mothers help out at their children’s schools to ease the teacher’s load, others like some teens I know do volunteer work outside of the school by tutoring students in need of school help. I know of a lady who lives in the Midwest who teaches knitting to people who want to knit. She gives of her time for no salary, they must buy their wool and knitting needles and she helps them to knit, gives them written instructions for their home knitting and when they are all finished the sweater, vest, gloves or hat, she has a small fashion show in the classroom and each knitter can model what they created. They get applause, ego enhancement and have a knitted garment they created and finished. I have told her in email correspondence with me, she is the knitting angel. I am going to help a new friend in Michigan to try to get her thoughts together and publish them online somewhere about her sad discovery that she is finally diagnosed with what ails her. After five years and many medical people weighing in on her symptoms; she found a new doctor who said it is Lupus. So she cannot work anymore and she wants to keep her mind occupied and away from her terrifying thoughts on her medical problems and she wants to write about it. I said I would look into where she could write a blog of sorts and maybe help others with this disease and they could all help each other in coping with it. She could be for herself and for them the writer on specific disease angel. We do not need Della Reese and Roma Downy to come and look over our shoulders to assist us with their angelic help. We who are able and willing can be an angel of sorts to help others who may need some aid emotionally or financially. Emotional help will not cost us anything, but some of our valuable time and financially, we could support someone in need of extra monetary guidance to find it. When I had a nasty dental assistant talk in a mean tone to me many weeks ago, the kind dental assistant heard all about it and Debby told me from now on whenever I came in, she would be my dental person for that visit, forever as long as she worked there. She now is my dental angel. I think I have now found the missing angel from Heaven mentioned in the beginning of this article. There was Mom, the hospital angel, my new friend will be the specific illness angel, Steven and Ikuko are the Hawaiian angels, there are the helping school angels, the knitting angel, the dental angel and if I am not appearing not so modest, Elita, can be an angel who writes these articles encouraging people to ballroom dance at any age, they are now and who also is encouraging you to become some sort of an angel to someone you know or do not know yet Della and Roma are no longer appearing in that show; we can appear now in their place. We are not the real angels in Heaven and we are not missing. We are angels of different perseverance’s and Ben Franklin said “to persevere is the mother of good luck.” An old proverb says “perseverance is the greatest of all teachers.” We who are able to be an on earth angel in whatever manner we can do this; can be proud of our “angelic perseverance” and not miss out on helping others to achieve something worthwhile in their lives and if they know of the old show from the nineties Touched By An Angel, maybe they can feel the angelic touch coming from our hearts and souls to their hearts and souls. Then we ourselves can feel that we have been touched by an angel in our life. This will be quite ‘angelic.’ elita sohmer clayman Fairfax Station, Virginia
