Ekoji will have its annual Obon Celebration. In Jodo-Shinshu Buddhism, it is called Kangi-e, or The Gathering of Joy, and is both a memorial service and a celebration in memory of our ancestors and all who have died. It is the most important occurence of our Buddhist year, and is our chance to remember our indebtedness to all who have gone before us, shaped us, and allow us to reaffirm that by their effect on us, they are still with us.
On July 9, 2011, at Ekoji, we will have Obon dancing, Nen-Daiko (Japanese drumming), Japanese-based foods such as chicken teriyaki, some noodles, curry bowls, and beef bowls, as well as Spam musubi (a Hawaii specialty,) and great hot dogs and desserts of all kinds. All are invited to dance with us, and of course, enjoy the food. The Obon service will be on Sunday, July 10, 2011.
The main hall is open to the public, and the Minister and Temple members will be available to answer any questions. So if you have and interest in other cultures, religions, or just like to dance and eat, please join us on.
