Jewelry Symbolizes Love

Any price jewelry can symbolize caring, love and feelings when worn

Mother’s day will come and go as the expression goes. A long time ago upon visiting our son, daughter-in-law and grandkids out of state.,the roads were quite crowded with travelers, many I am sure visiting their moms. Those of you who are lucky to still have moms are fortunate. My friend has a mom who will be ninety-two this year. My mom died when I was fifty and my dad when I was thirty. My brother called me up and said “now we are orphans.” True statement though you do not think of yourself as an orphan, when you are fifty and he was fifty-five. There were sellers of loose flowers gathered together in a bunch, all over the roads, but it looked like the flowers were still surviving. The restaurants were crowded with people just eating on a normal Sunday; and many more people celebrating Mom’s day. My little grandson age six and half looked at me when I arrived and looked at my jewelry I was wearing and he said “I see you spend all your money on jewelry.” True some of them are good quality and others high class costume jewelry. Jewelry is now defined in department stores as jewelry and then there is the fine jewelry counter featuring the fourteen karat or eighteen karat gold and sterling silver ones too. A jeweler friend of mine told me more people are buying sterling silver now because it is a lot less expensive than gold jewelry. People who need the money are selling their gold jewelry off to many jewelry stores who in turn get it melted down and sell it for the gold. It seems to be a big business now doing that as the jewelry stores all advertise “sell your gold to us rather than leave it sit in a box and you not wearing it.” Cubic zirconia sells too on the cable shopping networks and some of it looks like real diamonds. I remember on a soap opera I watched As The World Turns and this well to do rich doctor bought his girlfriend a ‘diamond ring.’ She took it to a jeweler and he told her it was glass and she threw it at him and broke up too. That was the first I heard the words CZ. A friend of mine Celeste was wearing this gorgeous ring on her engagement finger and when I saw it I was so excited for her. I thought she had gotten engaged and said congratulations. She said “hey, I bought this for myself on QVC.” It sure looked like a real one. I know of someone who got engaged recently and bought a very expensive ring. Then he bought a nice setting and bought a CZ to put in there. He figures if they travel, she does not have to wear the expensive one; she can wear the CZ one and not have to worry, if someone grabs it or she loses it. That I have never heard of. You can get your jewelry insured by your homeowner’s policy and still enjoy yourself wearing it I have a friend who lost a diamond stud while she was tightening it and standing over the bathroom sink. Down it went and was gone. She should have called a plumber and perhaps if she had not run the water until he came, it would have been lodged in the pipes or whatever that is called. By the time, she called one; it was gone down the drain to lost jewelry world. It was insured and she got reimbursed and never put on a piece of jewelry over a sink again. It was stupid, but she learned a good lesson. It is nice to own some expensive jewelry; but having it insured insures your piece of mind and allows you to enjoy wearing it and to get pleasure out of it. I just got an inexpensive pendant costing forty-nine dollars over the internet and it is called a Life Tree or A Journey necklace. It is a tree with little holes and they insert your history with a birthstone of the month your loved one was born. You start off with your birthstone of which mine is Alexandrite(lavender) and then my husband’s stone green for his month and then your children and if you have them your grandchildren and if you desire and one hole is left, your wedding anniversary month. It is really cute and comes from an online and reliable jewelry place called Eves Addictions. That is an appropriate name because many of us get addicted to jewelry, whether costume or fine jewelry as the more expensive line is called. I know of many ladies or girls who sleep in their jewelry and never take it off. My own mom never took off her wedding band until she had an operation and they told her no jewelry. She was worried she would have bad luck if she took it off. I held it for her and she was fine. I had a plumber come into my home and somehow he distracted us and reached into a drawer where I had a few fine jewelry pieces. He had me running back and forth asking my husband if he saw any water in the downstairs level as this thief was running the faucet to try and find a leak. My body was running back and forth to the stairway asking my husband if he saw any water; the thief took a chance and opened a dresser drawer and lo and behold took the wedding band I had married in and my husband’s band. We could not prove it, we know it was him. He even had the ‘chutzpah’ (nerve) to call us that night and tell us he could do work on his own time at half the price his employer would charge us. We had no proof other than they were there in a closed drawer and gone five minutes after his visit. The only thing I can advise, is enjoy your jewelry, whether costume kind or expensive ones; just be careful wearing it or storing it; and if it is insured which really is not that expensive if added to your homeowner’s policy, take pleasure and love it and believe that you sparkle, shine, shimmer, and have self-esteem, it kind of makes you special. Self-esteem is the “most voluble of emotions.” Frank Colby said that and I can add to it an old well known saying that says a “rose is a rose is still a rose.”He used the word voluble, not valuable. Jewelry whatever it cost, five dollars or five thousand dollars is a meaningful expression of love, admiration and happiness. We all strive for happiness and now that men are wearing necklaces, wedding bands and pretty watches, it is a man and woman adventure into fun by displaying pretty items on their body. I think that jewelry makes the soul shine a bit more and the heart feels a bit happier. There was a Broadway play that was popular for dozens of years. In it, Carol Channing the lead actress sang a song called “A Diamond Is A Girl’s Best Friend.” Any kind of jewelry you own and love is a good friend to your arm, neck or hands. Enjoy what you own and especially admire it and love the person who gave it to you. It is special whether it is CZ, real diamonds, emeralds, rubies, amethyst, gold, silver or whatever, because it is the thought that counts and especially the emotions you feel when you wear it. I received a nice charm for last mom’s day and believe me, it is gorgeous, but it is the endearing thought behind it that is most important to me. As my grandson said that I spend all my money on jewelry, I or we do not, but do cherish and appreciate whatever you have. Adore the pieces you have from really wonderful relatives, your mom, and dad and if they are gone now, value it forever and forever. It is something that can never be replaced, because it was given to you with deep love and caring. elita sohmer clayman This is my 50th article for Fairfax Station Patch, the number 50 is gold on a jewelry chart.
