A Many Splendored Life

I am new to this state. So forgive me if I will continue to love my Ravens (not the bird) our football team. Up until about five years ago, I still could not tell which team was running where. When my husband and I were courting back in 198, he told me he could not see me the following weekend. Why I said? He was going to the big game in New York City between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants. Wow, I thought, what kind of a young man would rather go to a football game than see this gorgeous young woman he had only met the end of the previous year?

 He was going to pharmacy school and I was working at my job. Well, it was equal then to what is now the Super Bowl playing next Sunday. He has not stopped talking about it since because we won and it was a terrific time. I am glad I ‘let’ him go.

 So fifty-five years later, I started to love our Ravens and we all bought purple jackets (their color) and purple ribbon ties around our outside lamp posts and we wore lavender or purple nail polish and every Friday, the whole town and community wore purple to work. Some wore shirts with the name of their favorite players and others wore necklaces with the charm of the team’s logo.

I know I am in Redskins territory, so I will not wear purple for now on the weekends. I will still wear my purple/lavender eye shadow when I please. The Ravens won two Super Bowls and I have a sort of statue that shows the rings they get when they win and the word 2x.

My favorite movie of all times is Love Is A Many Splendored Thing featuring William Holden and Jennifer Jones. This is the kind of movie you go to with your love. When I saw it in about 1955, I went to see it with a guy who would have never been the love of my life. When I met my husband, I made sure that we watched it together because he is the love of my life for almost 56 years. In the movie William said to Jennifer upon his leaving Europe where they resided for Korea for a journalistic assignment. He said “ if I do not come back, we will not have missed, because we have had our many splendored thing.”

I love this saying and I had the song sung at our wedding during the ceremony by a singer I hired to. I have the movie copy, the CD copy and the music sung by Jerry Vale.

Always try to remember you are having a many splendored thing in your life, if you have what you want or will have eventually. If you have love, children, a good job, your health, a home, grandchildren if it is the time for them, some good friends, good health persons who you go to when necessary and contentment.

Once when my grandchildren were visiting us in Baltimore, he looked at his grammie and grandpa and he said “ I wish you lived next door to us.” So now we are nearby in Virginia and so far I love Virginia. I use to tell my friend of 50 years, her name was Virginia, you should live in Virginia. She is gone now, so dear friend we are living in Virginia and life is a many splendored thing right now in our senior lives.
