Montpelier Project Approved by Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution

DAR state regent announces project at Montpelier, home of James Madison

On July 16, 2016, Virginia Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) State Regent Judith Joy Surber announced that her project for the next 3 years will be to raise an estimated $200,000 to underwrite a conference room at the new Claude Moore Hall, which is located at the Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution on the grounds of Montpelier, home of James Madison who is known as the Father of the Constitution. State Regent Surber proposed the project at the Virginia DAR Board of Management meeting, which was held at the Holiday Inn Bristol Conference Center in Bristol, Va., and called for all Virginia DAR members to “Strive to preserve the history, share the knowledge, and thoroughly enjoy the blessings of liberty.” Over 234 DAR members from 116 chapters across the state approved the project. Among those attending were Janet Crowl, Lisa Maloney, and Nancy Simmons, who are members of Providence Chapter DAR located in Fairfax Station, Va.

Montpelier’s Robert H. Smith Center for the Constitution, a teaching academy, has engaged tens of thousands of professionals from all 50 states and more than 90 nations in the theory and practice of the United States Constitution. Construction has begun on Claude Moore Hall, a state-of-the-art $4.7 million building containing meeting and classroom facilities, offices and a media center for video interviews and professional productions. This new building will allow the Center to extend its reach to a larger community of adult learners, alumni, and constitutional leaders who make up its audience.

DAR was founded in 1890 to promote patriotism, preserve American history, and support better education for our nation's children. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With more than 180,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world's largest and most active service organizations. Providence Chapter is located in Fairfax Station.
