Sivasankari Rajamarthandan, a senior, was awarded the $2,500 scholarship. She told award officials that he was interested in a career in medicine.
Forty-one Fairfax County Public School students were awarded the nationwide scholarships funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Students from the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, Chantilly High School, Centreville High School, and Fairfax High School were recognized, among others.

Students were selected based on their grades, difficulty of courses, standardized tests, leadership in community activities, an essay and a recommendation. In the fall, 16,000 semi-finalists were selected from across the country. That was later narrowed down to a group of approximately 2,500 National Merit finalists chosen to receive scholarships.
