Field Hockey wins regional tourney opener

South County Field Hockey (15-5):

pushed Lake Braddock to double overtime last Friday in the Patriot District championship game, but ultimately lost 2-1. On four days’ rest, the Stallions defeated Chantilly 5-2 in the opening round of the 2011 regional tournament on Tuesday.

Jackie Best, Kelsey Cummings, Stephanie Halsted, Caroline Karwel and Alexis Schramm each scored goals against Chantilly. The Stallions face Washington-Lee this Thursday in the second round of regional tournament action.

South County Football (5-3):

The Stallions enjoyed a 13-7 homecoming win over West Springfield last Friday. The win increases South County’s win streak to five and gives the team a 4-1 record in Patriot District play. Michael Ferguson kicked two field goals of 40 and 30 yards and Shane Foley scored the team’s lone touchdown on a four yard run.

Defensively, South County forced five West Springfield fumbles and limited West Springfield passers to just two completions.

Winless in Patriot District play, Annandale travels to South County this Friday.

Junior Varsity Football (3-2-1):

JV football defeated West Springfield 7-0 last Thursday for their third win of the season and travels to Annandale this Thursday.

South County Volleyball (19-5):

The Stallions defeated T.C. Williams 3-0 last Thursday, winning matches 25-17, 25-14 and 27-25. Kathryn Moore turned in an impressive performance as she tallied eight kills, three digs and two blocks.

The team defeated 16-win Lake Braddock 3-1 this Monday, winning matches 25-16, 25-18 and 25-21. Dana Robertson recorded a season-high 39 digs and Allison Bruder, Eva Cruz and Kathryn Moore combined for 39 kills.

South County closes its regular season this Wednesday at home against West Springfield and will have a brief break from action before district tournament play commences next week.

Junior Varsity Volleyball (11-3):

Following their varsity counterparts, the Stallion JV squad owns a five-game win streak. The team defeated T.C. Williams 2-1 last Thursday, and Lake Braddock 2-1 on Monday. They close the season out on Wednesday against West Springfield.

Freshmen Volleyball (5-8):

South County’s freshmen team dropped a contest to T.C. Williams last Thursday and defeated Lake Braddock 2-0 on Monday. The squad hosts West Springfield this Wednesday for the final game of the season.
