St. Peter’s in the Woods Wins Grant by NOVA Audubon Society

St. Peter's in the Woods Episcopal Church has been given a grant to purchase native plants and create a demonstration garden.

St. Peter’s in the Woods Episcopal Church has been given a grant of $1,250 to purchase native plants and create a demonstration pollinator garden on church property -- one of six local churches to be awarded. Parishioners Mary and Steve Wharton initiated the request. Mary is a Master Naturalist and Steve is St. Peter’s Junior Warden. The grant is part of the Audubon Society of Northern Virginia’s Audubon at Home, or AAH. The grant is in line with the Audubon vision to restore wildlife habitat to our landscapes; and to focus on those plants that are truly native to the region and support local wildlife. The church is also applying to be a bird sanctuary property

“The beauty of being St. Peter’s ‘in the Woods’ is our natural setting,” said the Rev. Susan Hartzell, priest in charge. “Whether it’s looking out our sanctuary windows and watching the seasons change, worshipping outdoors, enjoying a quiet walk along our meditation trail or labyrinth, our setting invites people to a deeper appreciation of God’s creation. We are grateful for this grant from the Audubon Society to enhance our property with more native Virginia plantings.”

St. Peter’s in the Woods is located at 5911 Fairview Woods Drive in Fairfax Station. More information can be found at: http://www.stpetersinthewoods.org
