3 Easy Accessibility Solutions for Aging-In-Place
There are several small ways you can make your home more accessible without breaking the bank…or even breaking a sweat.

More and more older adults are choosing to stay independent in their homes for longer periods of time. If you’re considering aging-in-place, but aren’t quite ready to delve into a major remodeling project, we have some good news: there are several small ways you can make your home more accessible without breaking the bank…or even breaking a sweat.
While it’s important to remember that your aging-in-place solutions should be specific to your own individual needs, here are three easy ways to increase the accessibility and safety of your home.
Add an extra handrail on your stairs

Handrails that go up both sides of a staircase can help make climbing the stairs feel more balanced and secure. Rather than just holding on with one hand or, worse, shuffling sideways to hold on with both, you can have support on both sides of your body.
Plus, adding an extra handrail is an inexpensive and relatively simple remodeling job that won’t take up too much of your time.

Put motion-activated lights in your bedroom and bathroom
As you age, your ability to see in low light might become compromised. Rather than fumbling in the dark for a light switch, consider using a room motion sensor or occupancy sensor to activate lights.
While you may want to call a qualified electrician to install your motion sensors, a good temporary solution is a battery operated LED version that can easily be stuck to a bathroom mirror with some double-sided tape.
Install a folding bench seat in the shower
With the added slip risk of water, the bathroom can be one of the most hazardous places for someone who hopes to safely age-in-place. If a full shower remodel isn’t in your budget, installing a bench seat in your shower is a great compromise. You can find models that fold flat against the wall so they aren’t in the way, but fold out to create sturdy seating if needed.
