America's Race to Incarcerate: Causes, Consequences, and Prospects for Reform

America’s Race to Incarcerate: Causes, Consequences, and Prospects for Reform. A presentation and discussion with Marc Mauer on Sunday, February 22 at 12:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, 2709 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton, VA. This event will be held in the main sanctuary.

Marc Mauer will examine how the U.S. has come to be the world leader in imprisonment over the past four decades. As a result of “tough on crime” policies and the “war on drugs,” more than two million Americans are behind bars, with profound racial disparities in the justice system. In recent years, prospects for criminal justice reform have emerged, including intriguing prospects for liberal/conservative partnerships for sentencing and drug policy reform.

Marc Mauer, Executive Director of the Sentencing Project, has directed programs on criminal justice policy reforms for 30 years. He is the author of some of the most widely cited reports and publications in the field. He has testified before Congress and state legislatures, appears frequently on radio and television networks, and is interviewed regularly by the New York Times, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, and many other major media outlets. He has served as an adjunct faculty member at George Washington University and Payne Theological Seminary, as well as a consultant to the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the National Institute of Justice, and the American Bar Association’s Committee on Race and the Criminal Justice System. He has been recognized with several national awards relating to crime and delinquency, drug policy, sentencing, and community corrections.
