Bailey's Crossroads Fire Leaves Dozen Apartments Inhabitable
Investigators determined unattended cooking caused the massive fire Thursday morning.

BAILEY'S CROSSROADS, VA—Fairfax County Fire and Rescue says 12 apartments are inhabitable after the Thursday, Jan. 31 fire in Bailey's Crossroads. Investigators determined the cause to be unattended cooking on a stove.
The dozen units were damaged during the heavy fire. Red Cross is assisting 32 displaced residents with immediate needs. Damages to the building are estimated to be $335,000.
Firefighters from Fairfax County, Arlington County and Alexandria responded to the fire around 5:36 a.m. in the 3400 block of Carlin Springs Road. Additional alarms were requested due to weather and heavy fire showing from the second floor extending to the third floor and the roof.

A resident discovered the fire upon returning home and began notifying neighbors. 911 operators received multiple calls reporting people trapped in their apartments. Firefighters made at least eight rescues, and no injuries were reported. One person was evaluated by EMS but declined transport to the hospital. With temperatures below freezing, a Fast Trans bus was utilized to keep displaced residents warm.
