Bike Share Is Getting in Gear in Falls Church

A 'Bike Share' program in 'The Little City' is closer to reality, thanks to two regional grants.

From the City of Falls Church:

Bike share in The Little City is closer to reality, thanks to two regional grants. Last week the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) approved $500,000 in operating costs. Earlier this summer, the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) authorized a $2 million grant for capital expenses. A bike share program can now get in gear!

Of the two grant approvals, Council Member David Snyder said, “We appreciate the high degree of regional cooperation and coordination with the state. Our project and the others will play a key role in reducing congestion and providing attractive alternatives to single occupancy vehicles. That’s good for the environment and good for all transportation users.”

The next steps for the bike share program include continuing community engagement and initiating procurement, with an estimated launch of late 2017 or early 2018. Approximately 16 stations will be installed throughout the City along corridors defined in the City’s Bike Master Plan. Key locations include W. Broad St. and Park Ave., S. Washington St. and Maple Ave., on the Washington and Old Dominion Trail, and on Roosevelt Blvd.

The bike share program is part of the Bike Master Plan which was unanimously adopted by the City Council with recommendations from the Planning Commission, the Citizens Advisory Committee on Transportation, the Environmental Services Council, and the Economic Development Authority.
