NAMI-NoVA’s annual fundraiser COMEDY NIGHT
According to the National Institute on Mental Health, about 1 in 4 adults suffer from a mental disorder, and one in 17 people live with a serious mental illness, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia, The World Health Organization estimates that 450 million people worldwide suffer from such diseases.
Despite these staggering statistics, the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) reports that nationally, between 2009-2011, states cut more than $1.6 billion from their budgets for services helping children and adults who have mental disorders.
The need for mental health services continues to grow, and with those increased needs comes the parallel necessity to increase both awareness and fundraising dollars.
To raise awareness of mental illness and funds for NAMI-NoVA—whose mission is to support and educate Northern Virginians with mental illnesses and their families and whose programs are completely free— the organization sponsors an annual Comedy Night fundraiser.
This year’s event is to take place on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at the State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia, a historic movie theatre that has been turned into an entertainment venue with full bar and food service, as well as a state-of-the-art sound system. The gala will feature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and an exciting raffle.

The centerpiece of the evening will be the performance of the heartwarming and hilarious award-winning, multi-media one-woman show, BIO-HAZARD: A RELATIVE COMEDY written and performed by Sarah Elizabeth Greer. This play bitter sweetly—and sometime absurdly—addresses the mental and emotional challenges of being adopted.
BIO-HAZARD: A RELATIVE COMEDY has been showcased to sold-out audiences at the United Solo Festival (the world’s largest solo festival) in NYC for the last two years. It will be shown there again in November of 2014, and has already sold out!
