Driver Faces More Charges After Falls Church Pedestrian Killed

A woman was killed and a juvenile injured when the man hit them with a stolen truck, according to police.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — A fatal pedestrian crash just outside the City of Falls Church in August has led to additional charges for the driver.

A jury indicted David Alan Francis, 46, of South Riding on charges of felony homicide, felony hit and run, aggravated involuntary manslaughter, possession of schedule I/II narcotics and driving under the influence of drugs. Francis is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond. He was previously charged with felony hit and run.

Betty Ana Bernstein-Zabza, 60, of Falls Church was killed in the crash at Shreve Road and Hickory Street on Aug. 3. Fairfax County Police say she and a juvenile were in a crosswalk connecting to a sidewalk when they were hit by a 2013 Nissan Titan pickup truck. Bernstein-Zabza was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, while the juvenile had minor injuries.

Police say Francis ran from the scene but was arrested. Police determined the truck involved in the crash was stolen. Speed and drug were likely factors in the crash.
