Faith-based development aid: help or hindrance?

A Science, Reason & Religion Presentation on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 12:30 pm

"Faith-based development aid: help or hindrance?," a presentation and discussion with Katherine Marshall on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at 12:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, 2709 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton, VA. This event will be held in the Program Building’s Chapel.

Ms. Marshall’s presentation will address the frictions and misunderstandings between the international aid institutions and the main religious aid programs. Contentious issues have included family planning and tackling HIV/AIDS. What is the present balance and what are future prospects?

Katherine Marshall has worked for over three decades on international development, with a focus on issues facing the world’s poorest countries. She is now a senior fellow at Georgetown University's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs and Visiting Professor in the School of Foreign Service. Her long career with the World Bank (1971-2006) involved a wide range of leadership assignments. In the 1980s she was Country Director for parts of Latin America, notably Bolivia, where she helped a reforming administration launch a program to channel international aid into community-based self-help projects, an institutional model subsequently adopted successfully by many other developing countries. She went on to become Country Director in the Bank’s Africa region, first for the Sahel region, then Southern Africa. She then led the Bank's work on social policy and governance during the East Asia crisis years.
