Falls Church Election 2019: Voters Choose Council, School Board

Voters will decide races for Falls Church City Council and School Board during Tuesday's election.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — Voters head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 5 to decide races for Falls Church City Council and School Board. In addition, candidates for state legislative and local prosecutor races are on the ballot. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Voters in line by 7 p.m. will be able to vote.

Three seats on the seven-person City Council are up for grabs. There are four candidates: current Mayor David Tarter, incumbent Councilmembers Phil Duncan and Letty Hardi, and Stuart Whitaker. Members are elected for four-year terms. When a new council is elected, members choose the mayor and vice mayor for two-year terms.

The seven-member school board also has three seats up for election. The four candidates are incumbent Phil Reitinger and newcomers Laura Downs, Douglass Stevens and Susan Dimock. Members serve four-year terms.

Falls Church's state senator, Minority Leader Dick Saslaw, is unopposed in the general election. He claimed victory in a competitive 35th Senate district race against human rights lawyer Yasmine Taeb. State Del. Marcus Simon is running unopposed in the 53rd District, and Parisa Dehghani-Tafti is unopposed in the Arlington/Falls Church Commonwealth's Attorney after a primary win over current prosecutor Theo Stamos.

Ward 1 residents vote at Thomas Jefferson School, 601 South Oak Street. For this year only, the polling place for Ward 2 voters is the Falls Church Community Center, 223 Little Falls Street, as the usual polling place (Falls Green) undergoes renovations. Ward 3 voters will continue to vote at the Falls Church Community Center. An acceptable form of photo identification is required to cast a ballot in Virginia.
