Falls Church School Board Calls For Gun Control

The resolution comes as the district is conducting a building security audit and looking at other school safety improvements.

The Falls Church School Board unanimously approved a resolution calling for stricter gun laws at a special meeting Friday, March 2. The resolutions calls on the Virginia General Assembly and Congress to work on gun control measures in light of the Parkland, Florida shooting that killed 17 people and other school shootings since Columbine.

The resolution specifically asks for state legislation giving localities the power to prohibit people from carrying guns in city facilities.

"The Falls Church City School Board calls upon the United States Congress and state legislatures, including the Virginia General Assembly, to prioritize the protection of students and local government employees by passing legislation that more effectively regulates access to firearms in the interest of public safety; funds public health research on firearms-related issues; advances mental health support; and allows local governments to enact common sense local gun policies," reads the resolution.

The school board is also promising to look at additional safety preparations, facility improvements and emotional support for students. That includes reviewing an ongoing building security audit and implementing remediations the superintendent recommends.

The Fairfax County School board passed a similar resolution after the Parkland shooting. One school board member asked for a discussion on having armed security in all schools, but that measure was voted down.
