Flash Flood Warning Issued For DC, NoVA As Rainfall Rates May Reach Two Inches Per Hour

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Thursday afternoon for part of the Washington, D.C. metro area.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Thursday afternoon for part of the Washington, D.C. metro area. The watch is in effect until 7 p.m.

Flash flooding conditions are in southwestern D.C. and in the following areas of Northern Virginia: Arlington County, east-central Fairfax County, Alexandria and Falls Church.

Slow-moving showers and thunderstorms are expected to produce very heavy rainfall, potentially leading to areas of flash flooding. Rainfall rates may reach two inches per hour.

At 3:50 p.m., Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the area. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the area.

Heavy rainfall may lead to the rapid rising of water in local streams and urban areas with poor drainage.
