• The Heart of a University: Shirley Strum Kenny's Lasting Impact (stonybrook.edu) — A memorial service for former Stony Brook University president Shirley Strum Kenny will be held at Temple Rodef Shalom in Falls Church on September 9 at 1:30 p.m. Kenny, a pioneering academic leader who transformed Stony Brook into a top-tier research institution and expanded its medical and arts footprint, died September 3 at age 92 in McLean.
   

• Spirit Halloween stores swooping into Northern Virginia (theburn.com) — Spirit Halloween is opening several Northern Virginia pop-up stores this month, including one at Seven Corners near Falls Church that's convenient for local costume and decor shopping. Other locations span Ashburn, Dulles Town Center, Springfield, Alexandria, Manassas, Woodbridge, and Warrenton, giving Falls Church residents plenty of nearby options as Halloween approaches.
   

• Pop-up immigration courts seem to appear in D.C. and Virginia (npr.org) — Some immigrants with Maryland and Virginia cases are suddenly being told to appear at a non-court building in Falls Church, adding confusion for people already navigating a complex system. Attorneys say these pop-up locations, also including one in D.C., lack clear Justice Department ties and risk missed hearings and due-process problems for affected families.
