Perspectives on Science, Scientists, Religion, and Discovery, a presentation and discussion with Dr. Jennifer Wiseman on Sunday, March 1, 2015, at 12:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, 2709 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton, VA. This event will be held in the Program Building Chapel.
Telescopes and microscopes are yielding incredible discoveries, from the very large to the very small. But it is people, including scientists and religious thinkers, who interpret what these discoveries can mean for humanity. Dr. Wiseman will discuss recent major scientific discoveries, and several proposed approaches to the relationship between science and religious faith. She will share how the American Association for the Advancement of Science is building bridges between scientists and religious communities.
Dr. Jennifer Wiseman directs the program of Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She also studies the formation of stars in our galaxy as a senior astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, where she previously served as Chief of the Laboratory for Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics. She received her B.S. in physics from MIT, discovering comet Wiseman-Skiff in 1987, and continued her studies at Harvard, earning a Ph.D. in astronomy in 1995. Dr. Wiseman also has an interest in public science policy and has served as a Congressional Science Fellow of the American Physical Society, working with the staff of the Science Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives. She grew up on an Arkansas farm enjoying late night stargazing walks with her parents and pets.
