A teen called 911 and said he had been shot in the face by a man who lives in the apartment. The victim tried to hide from the armed suspect in a bedroom and told the police dispatcher that the man was actively trying to break into the room.
Fairfax County police officers and sheriff's deputies in the area responded and attempted negotiations with the armed man. There was no progress in the negotiations, and police determined the victim's life was in danger. Officers then entered the home and encountered the suspect armed with a gun. Two officers discharged their weapons, striking the man in the upper body. The officers immediately took the victim from the residence to a safe location and took the man into custody. Officers then rendered aid to the suspect until fire and rescue personnel stepped in.

After the incident, Police Chief Ed Roessler told reporters the responding officers and sheriff's deputies saved the life of the victim. Per police department policy, criminal and administrative investigations into the officer-involved shooting were started.
Fairfax County policy requires names of officers involved in deploying deadly force to be released to the public within 10 days, unless the police chief determines a credible threat to the safety of those involved or if additional time is required to thoroughly complete the risk assessment process. According to a police department statement, Roessler has indicated "he needs additional time to fully and thoroughly complete the risk assessment process to make an informed decision regarding the release of the involved police officers’ names."
The involved officers are a 20-year and an 18-year veteran assigned to the Special Operations Division. The criminal and administrative investigations continue.
