Powering 250K Homes: Dominion Solar, Storage Projects Approved

Dominion Energy received approval for 15 new solar and energy storage projects that will provide enough electricity to power 250,000 homes.

VIRGINIA — Dominion Energy received approval for 15 new solar and energy storage projects that will provide enough electricity to power 250,000 homes in the state at peak output.

The Virginia State Corporation Commission on Tuesday approved the 15 Dominion Energy projects, as well as agreements for Dominion to purchase power from 24 other renewable energy projects proposed by third-party developers.

“This is another significant milestone in Virginia’s transition to energy independence,” Ed Baine, president of Dominion Energy Virginia, said in a statement Wednesday.

Virginia currently ranks ninth in the nation for the amount of solar energy — 3,761 megawatts —installed in the state, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. The current amount of solar energy installed in Virginia is enough to power 459,409 homes, the association said.

Construction of the 15 Dominion projects is expected to generate more than $880 million in economic benefits across Virginia and will support nearly 4,200 jobs, according to Dominion.

The 15 solar and energy storage projects are expected to be completed later this year and in 2023 and will add about $1.13 to the typical residential customers’ monthly bill, the company said.
