Replacement Restaurant For Mosaic District's Brine Announced
Brine, a farm-to-table restaurant from the Rappahannock Oyster Co. co-owner, closed in early 2020.
MERRIFIELD, VA — After farm-to-table restaurant Brine closed in January at the Mosaic District, a replacement is slated to take over the space this summer. Urbano will open at 2985 District Avenue #120.
The first location opened at 116 King Street, Alexandria in January 2019. Urbano 116 came from Common Plate Hospitality, which also owns Mason Social and Augie’s Mussel House and Beer Garden in Old Town Alexandria. The restaurant group recruited award-winning Mexico City Chef Alam Méndez Florián to develop the menu.
The Mosaic District location will have an expanded menu with more Tex-Mex items. Expect nine taco options (braised chicken, grilled chicken, grilled steak, carnitas, shredded beef, smoked brisket, grilled shrimp, crispy fish and mushroom) served with rice and a choice of beans. Starters include chili relleno, shrimp ceviche, quesadillas, wings and more. The entree choices range from roasted chicken with red chili sauce, fried plantains and rice to smoked pork belly with corn, avocado, pickled vegetables and tortillas. A selection of burritos, enchiladas and chimichangas are also available. Food can be paired with various margaritas and other cocktails.

An exact opening date has not been announced for the summer opening at Mosaic District.
Brine was open from May 2015 to January 2020, offering a raw bar, wood-fired grill and rotisserie. The owner was Travis Croxton, co-owner of Rappahannock Oyster Co. and its oyster and clam farms in the Chesapeake Bay. Aside from seafood, Brine earned customer praise for its burger, according to Eater DC. Rappahannock Oyster Co. is featured in the food hall at the new Whole Foods Mid-Atlantic flagship store in Tysons.

The flagship Urbano 116 location in Alexandria is set to undergo light renovations and relaunch with an expanded menu. The menu will be revamped to match the offerings at the Mosaic District location. It will close on Feb. 24 and reopen on Feb. 29 with an expanded menu.
