Rocks Painted To Recognize World Cancer Day At Justice High
The spirit rocks serve two purposes: to raise awareness about blood cancer and to cheer on Justice against rival Falls Church High School.
SEVEN CORNERS, VA — World Cancer Day on Feb. 4 raises awareness about the country's second leading cause of death, and it didn't pass without recognition at Justice High School. A team of students painted spirit rocks in recognition of cancer survivors and victims and to fundraise for a cure.
Three students — sophomore Grace Martin, junior Jake Beres and senior Trevor Hershner — are leading the effort as part of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Student of the Year program. This seven-week program features high school students from around the country fundraising to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission. The charitable organization seeks to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, as well as boost the quality of life for patients and their families. The team that raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks are named Students of the Year.
The Justice High School team joined the effort to fight blood cancer in honor of friends and family members who survived blood cancer as well as those who have died.

The spirit rocks were painted ahead of Friday's boys and girls basketball teams against rival Falls Church High School. It was one of numerous activities Justice High School's team is promoting. During the week of World Cancer Day, the students are talking to classmates about Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission and collecting money during lunch periods and school sporting events throughout the week.
Their seven-week fundraising campaign is also raising money through community events, local restaurant nights and individual donations. The campaign ends on March 7.
