Welcoming Falls Church To Hold Welcoming Week 2023

Welcoming Falls Church, a group helping refugees and immigrants, will host its annual Welcoming Week in September.

FALLS CHURCH, VA — A group that has been helping refugee families settle in Falls Church and supporting immigrants is preparing for its annual Welcoming Week in September.

Welcoming Falls Church will host Welcoming Week from Sept. 8 to 23. The Welcoming Week events are intended for residents to learn about the organization and meet neighbors.

The organization focuses on showing hospitality to refugees and immigrants in Falls Church. Its major initiatives include a Renting to Refugees program to move five refugee families to the city with rent assistance and other guidance.

The next family move-in is expected on Sept. 30. The support team is full for this date, but interested residents can sign up to learn more about future available roles.

Other initiatives by Welcoming Falls Church include adult and family literacy classes to teach immigrants English and grocery deliveries.

Welcoming Week provides a setting for residents to learn about volunteer opportunities with Welcoming Falls Church. This will be the sixth year Welcoming Falls Church has held Welcoming Week.

It all kicks off with an ice cream social at Mr. Brown's Park (100 block of W. Broad Street) on Friday, Sept. 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

On Monday, Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m., Falls Church City Council is scheduled to adopt a proclamation recognizing Welcome Week.

On Saturday, Sept. 16 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the Harvey’s Yacht Club Fundraiser will be held to benefit Welcoming Falls Church. The event includes an all-you-can-eat oyster and pig roast.

The last event is the Falls Church Festival on Saturday, Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Welcoming Falls Church will have a booth to inform residents how to get involved.
