Card Cellar Owner Says Downtown Will Be 'Step Up For Us'

Bart Goldberg, the owner of the Card Cellar, said he was initially concerned about moving his business from Four-Mile Fork to downtown Fredericksburg on Caroline Street, but there's one key reason why this specific building works for him.

"The good thing about that location is it has a municipal parking garage close by," Godberg said during an interview from Atlanta, where he was at a large gift show that had hundreds of companies showing off their gift lines.

Four-Mile Fork served him well for over 20 years, he said, but he wanted a more upscale setting. He said half of his store will be antiques that he has been selling at and gifts and the other half will be his Card Cellar items. Card Cellar also has former star athletes in for signings, such as former Cowboys players Jay Novachek, Ed "Too Tall" Jones and Danny White, formers Steelers' player Frency Fuqua, numerous former Redskins players, former Bears' player William "The Fridge" Perry and former pro wrestlers such as Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka. 

The walk-by traffic in downtown, the good restaurants and the tourists are all assets he doesn't get at Four-Mile Fork, Goldberg said.

"I think it will be a step up for us," he said.

Goldberg has already set up the first sports signing for the 915 Caroline St. location. Eddie LeBaron, 82, the Dallas Cowboys' first quarterback in team history, will be at the Card Cellar's new location the first Saturday in November for a signing event. He also played 10 seasons with the Cowboys arch nemesis Washington Redskins until the Cowboys scooped him up from the unprotected players' list after an error by former Redskins owner Preston Marshall. Nicknamed the "Little General" because of his short height, he played his first game with the Cowboys in 1960 and ended up getting benched in 1963 for QB Don Meredith. LeBaron retired after that season.
