Crews Begin Work On 322-Space Downtown Parking Garage Project

The new garage will serve the Liberty Place and the proposed William Square development, which will include a hotel and commercial space.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Work crews have begun moving dirt to prepare for the construction of a 322-space parking garage along William Street in downtown Fredericksburg. The site is adjacent to the Liberty Place development between Douglas, William and Winchester streets, which is currently under construction.

The new parking garage will serve both the Liberty Place and the proposed William Square development, which will include a hotel, apartments and commercial space. Tenants at the 43,000-square-foot, three-level Liberty Place project will include Blue Cow Ice Cream, Burger Bach, Cary Street Partners, Mellow Mushroom, Pasta Fresca Cafe and Atlantic Union Bank. The target date for completion of the garage is June 1, 2020.

The city anticipates there will be opportunities for public paid parking in the garage, according to Bill Freehling, director of the Fredericksburg Department of Economic Development and Tourism. The city worked with the developers of Liberty Place and William Square to help jump-start both projects, including the garage, Freehling said in an email to Patch.

When complete, the new garage will be the second downtown Fredericksburg parking garage and the first one that is privately financed. The other garage, the city-owned Sophia Street parking garage, offers nearly 300 parking spaces, providing easy access to downtown Fredericksburg. It's within walking distance to train station, visitor's center and courts.
