Elderly Woman Duped By Acquaintance In Stafford: Police

He borrowed an elderly woman's vehicle and promised to return it the next day. He never did. Now he's in jail.

STAFFORD, VA—He borrowed an elderly woman's vehicle and promised to return it the next day. He never did. Now Kenneth Jerome Brown, Sr., 49, is in jail, and the vehicle is back with its rightful owner, according to the Stafford County Sheriff's Office.

Police responded to the woman's residence on North Pointe Drive when she contacted them July 19. She said that he went to her home on July 6 and asked to borrow the vehicle so he could use it on a side job. She knew him through a tree service company that comes to do work on her property every year, so she loaned it to him with the understanding he'd bring in back the following day.

The following day came and went, as did the next and the next and the next. Numerous calls to Brown went un-returned. After the woman called police, they contacted Brown and told him to return the vehicle immediately. He, in turn, called the woman and said he'd bring it back July 24.

Once again, he didn't. She called police again but this time they weren't able to reach him. But the next day, July 25, police responded to call about a man lying on Route 3. He was responsive when they arrived—and when they recognized him. He told them where the vehicle was, at a motel in Spotsylvania County near Lake Anna.

The vehicle was returned to the owner, and Brown was charged with "unauthorized use and driving revoked."
