Hirschler Fleischer Adds Canup as Tax Practice Chair

Richmond, Va., Oct. 23, 2014 — Hirschler Fleischer is pleased to announce that James W.C. “Jamie” Canup has joined as a Richmond-based partner to chair the firm’s Tax Practice. Canup brings over 25 years of experience from positions in the chief counsel’s office of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and at Am Law 100 law firms in New York, Washington and Richmond. His appointment as chair of Hirschler Fleischer’s Tax Practice furthers the firm’s work serving clients with local, state, federal and international tax matters.

“Jamie’s reputation as a leading tax practitioner and his commitment to providing practical business counsel make him a great resource to our clients,” said Brian Farmer, chair of Hirschler Fleischer’s Business Section. “His experience and leadership allow us to further serve our clients in matters related to REITs, 529 Plans, and other routine and complex tax issues. Canup’s practice focuses on pass-through entities, such as LLCs and partnerships, real estate investment trust (REITs), corporate transactions and tax-exempt organizations. He also advises issuers and investment managers on qualified tuition programs (529 Plans) and municipal fund securities.

Canup earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, his law degree from Washington & Lee University, and his LL.M. in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center.
