A man was taken into custody on Thursday night after a stand-off with police in Stafford County that lasted for more than 10 hours.

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A man was taken into custody by the Stafford County Sheriff's Office on Thursday night after a stand-off with police. The stand-off began around 1 p.m. and the man was taken into custody just before midnight.

The incident began in the afternoon on Thursday, Sept. 9. Authorities went to the man's home on Minuteman Circle in the Stonegate apartment complex to serve an emergency custody order, the sheriff's office said.

Initially, authorities said it was a "police incident," and asked residents to avoid the area if possible.

The sheriff's office said that on multiple occasions throughout the day, the man exited the home with knives in his hands. Each time, deputies used pepper balls, tasers, and other non-lethal measures in attempt to subdue the man, according to authorities. They were unsuccessful in initial attempts, and the man would retreat back into the home.

Kimmitz said negotiations continued into the night, and the sheriff's office used their crisis intervention team, crisis negotiation team, drone team, the K-9 team, and the SWAT team to establish a perimeter and attempt to lure the man from the apartment.

"Just before midnight, the subject exited the home and was taken into custody," Kimmitz said. "Thanks to the great work by our negotiators, this incident ended peacefully with no injuries to the suspect or law enforcement officers."

The sheriff's office said the man was charged with attempted felony assault for charging at officers with knives. Police did not publicly identify the man on Friday.
