May I call you Frank? Frankly, NO!

A Point of Protocol:

No matter how casually you are introduced to a person of authority, position or status, never assume it is okay to use a first name if first and last names are offered in the introduction. That is a privilege granted, not a right that should be taken. It implies familiarity which is not present upon the first greeting. If one prefers to be addressed by their given name, then it should be stated when the introduction is made, i.e., “please call me Ed”.
