National Day of Prayer in Fredericksburg
Local residents gathered at City Hall to participate in the National Day of Prayer, which has a theme of "One Nation Under God." The event was sponsored by the Fredericksburg Rappahannock Evangelical Alliance.
Fredericksburg residents and clergy men and women gathered at the steps of City Hall in downtown to celebrate the 61st annual National Day of Prayer.
Those who participated were Calvary Christian Church Pastor Michael Hirsch, Pastor Antonio Wright, Deacon Warren Hutchins, Pastor Karen Bettis Davis, Deacon Gary Adkins, Pastor James Arkord, Bishop Angela Kittrell, Pastor Shawn Davis, Pastor Hashmel Turner, Pastor Christine Dunk, Bishop Joseph Henderson and Rev. Bowie Curry. There were seven categories of prayer: government, military, media, businesses, education, church and family.
About two-dozen people attended the celebration, quietly bowing their heads in prayer for most of the hour-long event. The Fredericksburg Rappahannock Evangelical Alliance put on the event.

Pres. Barack Obama issued the proclamation for the National Day of Prayer on Monday. Pres. Harry Truman first signed the bill proclaiming National Prayer Day into law and Pres. Ronald Reagan amended it in 1988 to make the event on the first Thursday of May every year.
Fairview Baptist Church will have another event at 7 p.m. at 900 Charlotte St.
