Stafford Schools Announce Weather Plan For Thursday And Friday

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — Schools in Stafford County will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 6 and Friday, Jan. 7. The school system announced the closure on Wednesday due to hazardous road conditions and ongoing power outages.

The school system will observe a Code 1 on Thursday and Friday. Students and teachers will not report to classrooms, and no virtual learning will be conducted.

All school activities are cancelled. Due to system outages, the school system will delay the delivery of report cards until Jan. 18.

"Please continue to avoid driving if you can as roads remain treacherous," the school system said in their announcement. "We look forward to seeing everyone back safely when we return to school."

Officials said they would monitor weather conditions over the coming days. They plan to make a decision regarding Monday's operations over the weekend.

As of 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, 24,973 customers in Stafford County were without power. Approximately 42 percent of customers are affected by outages.

Stafford High School is currently open as a 24-hour emergency shelter for those in need. The shelter can provide warmth and power for those who have been impacted by the storm. Pets are permitted at the shelter as long as they are kenneled or leashed.
