- LIBERTY – Individual Rights under the Law
- PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS – Becoming and Defining “American”
Among the featured works is an engraving based on John Trumbull’s painting of the presentation of the Declaration of Independence to the Continental Congress by its primary authors (Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston).
Paintings and engravings of significant moments in American history are interwoven with personal representations of that story: a gold box presented to Major Benjamin Wolfe in 1794; Joseph Spengler’s birth certificate (circa 1800) based on a Germanic folk art tradition; and a Wedgewood Factory medallion by Henry Webber.
