Herndon Election 2016: Updated Results

HERNDON, VA — Polls closed in Virginia at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8 and here are the preliminary results, according to the Fairfax County Government. Check back here on Patch.com for updates on the results.

In Fairfax County, Hillary Clinton obtained 270,494 votes to 128,654 votes for Donald Trump.

In the Town of Herndon, Incumbent Mayor Lisa Merkel was re-elected with 4,898 votes to 2,382 votes for Jasbinder Singh. Here's the break down of votes:

• Lisa Merkel: 4,868 (1,030 absentee)
• Jasbinder Singh: 2,382 (403 absentee)

Here are the preliminary results for the Herndon Town Council: (voters could select 6 candidates from the list; winners in bold):

• Jennifer K. Baker: 4,678 votes
• Jeffrey L. Davidson: 3,842 votes
• Signe V. Friedrichs: 3,257 votes
• Connie H. Hutchinson: 3,281 votes
• William J. "Bill" McKenna: 3,968 votes
• Sheila A. Olem: 3,979 votes
• Grace Han Wolf: 4,099 votes
• David A. "Dave" Kirby: 2,807 votes
• Roland B. Taylor: 2,140 votes

There is a lot more work to be done following the announcement of the results, according to the Fairfax County Government:

• Beginning Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 9 a.m., the Office of Elections will begin a canvass of the county’s election results. Election officers and observers from both political parties review and double check the results from every voting machine. This should last about two days.
• Also on Nov. 9, the Electoral Board will begin reviewing provisional ballots and deciding which ballots can be voted and included with the county’s results. Voters have until Monday, Nov. 14, at noon to send a copy or present their photo ID to the Electoral Board.

Voters turned out in big numbers in the Town of Herndon's three precincts: Herndon Community Center, Herndon Elementary School and Herndon Middle School, according to the three location's Station Chiefs. There were no problems reported at any of the polling places.

"We had a steady stream of voters all day and the lines went quickly," said Chen Yang, Station Chief at Herndon Middle School.

All 3 polling places had Spanish and other language translators available to assist voters.

Voter Turnout (check back for updates):

Town of Herndon residents headed out to the polls in force and voter turn out was very strong at the 3 polling places, according to the Fairfax County Government:

• Herndon #1 (Herndon Elementary): 84% turn out with 3,223 votes cast out of 3,836 active registered voters (2,636 in-person, 587 absentee)
• Herndon #2 (Herndon Community Center): 80.8% turn out with 3,324 votes cast out of 4,116 active registered voters (2,745 in-person, 579 absentee)
• Herndon #3 (Herndon Middle School): 76.7% turn out with 2,755 votes cast out of 3,593 active registered voters (2,239 in-person, 516 absentee)

Countywide, Election Day turnout was 56%, according to the Fairfax County Government.

• At 2 p.m. voter turnout was at 45%, on average, at 243 precincts, plus 20% absentee ballots.
• At 11 a.m., Election Day turnout was at 30-35 percent at the County's 243 precincts, with a handful of precincts at or above 40 percent, according to the elections office. Turnout is based on active registered voters. The 11 a.m. percentages do not include absentee voting numbers in these precincts.
• At 10 a.m., turnout in Fairfax County was at roughly 20 percent, on average, according to Cameron Sasnett, General Registrar for Fairfax County, in a video update.
