Fallen Athlete From Brazil Honored With Police Escort to Dulles

GoFundMe site set up for family of Carlos Silva and two others injured in bicycle crash.

A police officer from Brazil who died last week at the World Police & Fire Games was honored Wednesday morning with a police escort to Dulles Airport.

Carlos Silva, 48, died Thursday of injuries he suffered in a collision during a bicycle race that afternoon in Prince William Forest Park, off Interstate 95 near Triangle. Two other cyclists were seriously injured.

On Wednesday, a double line of officers on motorcycles escorted a hearse bearing his body from an Alexandria funeral home to the airport. The officers came from Fairfax County and Fairfax City, as well as Prince William County, Alexandria, Arlington County and the Virginia State Police.

As the procession moved along the Beltway and the Dulles Access Road, Fairfax County fire and rescue personnel saluted Silva from an overpass,according to WRC-TV Channel 4.

The organizing committee of the World Police & Fire Games has set up a GoFundMe site to help Silva’s family and the other two athletes who were injured in last week’s cycling crash. To check it out, click here.
