HERNDON, VA — Herndon Police Department is warning town residents to beware of a telephone scam in which a caller posing as a police officer asks for money to resolve a legal matter, according to a post on HPD's official Twitter account.

HPD received multiple calls Friday morning from residents regarding this fraud. An individual identifying himself as "Lt. Mark Dale from the Herndon Police Department" was "spoofing" the department's non-emergency phone number to make it appear that the call was legitimate.

The police department would never call residents to request money to resolve a legal matter, according to the post. Town residents may call HPD's non-emergency number (703-435-6846) with any questions about this scam or to determine the call's legitimacy.
