Man Arrested For DC, NYC Homeless Shootings Was Convicted Of 2020 Assault NoVa Hotel

HERNDON, VA — Gerald Brevard III, who was arrested Tuesday morning in connection with a series of shootings targeting homeless men in Washington, D.C., and New York City, was convicted last year for assault and abduction outside a Herndon hotel.

On Jan. 25, 2021, Brevard was found guilty of abduction with the intent to defile and assault and battery charges in Fairfax County General District Court. The charges stem from a Nov. 27, 2020 incident in which police say Brevard grabbed a woman from behind as she was standing in the hallway of a hotel in the 13400 block of Sunrise Valley Drive in Reston.

Brevard received a sentence of 12 months supervised probation and was ordered to pay $290 in court costs, which court records show he is past due in paying.

Fairfax County Police arrested Brevard just after midnight on Dec. 17, 2020. Police say he was trying to break into a home in the 13900 block of Mansarde Avenue in the Herndon area. Brevard was charged with burglary and possession of burglarious tools.

On March 17, 2021, Brevard was found guilty on a felony burglary charge and pleaded nolle prosequi to the charge of possession of burglarious tools, according to court documents.

Brevard received a sentence of 12 months of supervised probation on the burglary charge. He was ordered to pay $150 in court costs but is past due in paying them, according to court records.

Brevard is due back in court on Thursday to face two misdemeanor charges of violating his probation.

Brevard was charged with first degree murder on Tuesday in connection with the March 9 death of 54-year-old Morgan Holmes, a homeless man whose body was recovered from a burning tent in Washington, D.C.

Police also charged him with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to kill in the two other recent shootings involving homeless men in the District. In those cases, both victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

New York City police have not levied any charges against Brevard for the two shootings that occurred last Saturday in their city, although they still consider him a person of interest in those cases.
