HERNDON, VA — A Herndon police officer has been placed on administrative leave after he shot a man fleeing on foot from a traffic stop on Tuesday afternoon, according to Capt. Justin Dyer of the Herndon Police Department.

The incident in question began around 12:30 p.m., when an HPD officer tried to stop a stolen vehicle in the 1100 block of Elden Street in Herndon, according to Dyer during a Tuesday afternoon briefing with reporters. The vehicle had three suspects inside.

"Two suspects fled on foot from the vehicle and responding officers gave chase, while one suspect remained the vehicle," he said. "The foot chase ended up in the 600 block of Dulles Park Court. During the foot chase, one of the suspects produced a firearm and was shot by one of our officers."

The officers rendered aid to the suspect until rescue personnel arrived. Dyer said the suspect was then taken to the hospital for treatment, where he was in stable condition.

"No officers were hurt during this incident, and, in accordance with departmental procedures, the investigation has been turned over to the Northern Virginia Criminal Incident Response team for further investigation."

The two remaining suspects were taken to police headquarters to be interviewed.

Dyer told reporters that police recovered a firearm at the scene. In addition, all HPD officers are equipped with body worn cameras and the footage will be reviewed as part of NVCIR's investigation.

"Per department policy, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave," Dyer said. "The suspect who was shot is currently wanted by our agency for multiple felonies, and has had numerous encounters with our agency."

The last time that HPD had an officer-involved shooting was in September 2019, according to Dyer.
