After a police investigation, Diana Stein, 51, has been charged with harboring a vicious dog, failure to notify a dangerous dog being loose and attacking another dog, and obstructing justice, the police said Wednesday. Stein and her dog have apparently left the area.
The police said they have made several attempts to contact Stein, but they’ve been unable to locate her and are asking for the public’s help. They said Stein was bitten in Sunday’s attack and sustained several wounds.

The Rottweiler has been involved in previous attacks and deemed a “dangerous dog” by the judicial system, the police said. “Rules and protocols surrounding dangerous dogs are stringent,” they added.
Due to the nature of the bites in Sunday’s attack, the law requires the dog to be quarantined, the police said. If it is not located, anyone who is bitten may need to go through a post-exposure series of shots for rabies, a deadly disease.
Officers responded at 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a report of an animal running at large and a dog attack in the 100 block of Laurel Way in Herndon, near Elden Street’s interchange with the Fairfax County Parkway.
The Rottweiler reportedly charged a Border Collie being walked near an apartment building. The dogs were eventually separated by witnesses, the police said, and the collie required veterinary care as he sustained multiple bite wounds.
