VA Coronavirus: Fairfax County, Henrico Lead State In Most Deaths

Fairfax County is reported to have the most deaths in Virginia with a total of 95 deaths as of Sunday morning.

VIRGINIA — The number of deaths in Virginia from the new coronavirus reached 448 as of Sunday morning. State health officials reported 12 new deaths from the day before. Fairfax County is reported to have the most deaths in the state with 95, with Henrico County reporting 89 deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus.

Virginia's number of positive new coronavirus cases increased by 704 from Saturday to Sunday, according to the Virginia Department of Health's latest data. The total number of cases stands at 12,970, including 12,488 laboratory-confirmed cases and 482 probable cases among patients with symptoms and a known exposure to COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus.

Earlier this week, the Virginia Department of Health released data on cases of the new coronavirus by county and independent city. That includes data on deaths, hospitalizations, cases per 100,000 people and breakdowns by ages and race. However, racial data remains missing for 32.3 percent of cases.

Fairfax County leads the state with 2,889 cases, followed by Prince William County with 1,265, Henrico County with 792, Arlington County with 790, Loudoun County with 596, and Alexandria with 591.

Here's the latest case update for jurisdictions in our Northern Virginia coverage area, as of Sunday:

  • Arlington County: 790 cases, 141 hospitalizations, 32 deaths
  • Fairfax County: 26 cases, 509 hospitalizations, 95 deaths
  • Fairfax City: 26 cases, four hospitalizations, two deaths
  • Falls Church: 26 cases, three hospitalizations, two deaths
  • Loudoun County: 596 cases, 76 hospitalizations, 11 deaths
  • Manassas: 158 cases, 25 hospitalizations, two deaths
  • Manassas Park: 45 cases, six hospitalizations, one death
  • Prince William County: 1,265 cases, 124 hospitalizations, 19 deaths
  • Fredericksburg: 23 cases, six hospitalizations, no deaths
  • Spotsylvania County: 107 cases, 23 hospitalizations, three deaths
  • Stafford County: 213 cases, 42 hospitalizations, two deaths

The Virginia Department of Health reports 2,014 hospitalizations, but the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association has more detailed information on current hospital resource use and discharged patients. As of Sunday, 1,436 people with confirmed or pending COVID-19 test results are hospitalized, a decrease of 506 patients from Saturday. The association says 1,815 confirmed COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals.

Of the hospitalized people with pending or confirmed results, 223 are on a ventilator and 357 are in the intensive care unit (ICU). There are 649 ventilators in use of the available 2,987 ventilators at Virginia hospitals. That represents 22 percent use of ventilators available in Virginia.

Virginia reported its first confirmed coronavirus case on March 7. As of Saturday, 76,118 people in the state have been tested for the virus, an increase of 3,940 from Friday's report.
