Almost everyone has heard the story about the Baltimore mother, Ms. Toya Graham, who pulled her son from the riots a few weeks ago. She will be sharing her testimony this Sunday, May 24 at The Zoe Center during Loudoun Bible Church’s 8:30 and 10 am Services.
Toya Graham, made headlines after she caught her 16-year-old son, participating in the recent Baltimore riots. “When the cameras are not there and it’s just me and my son and I’m trying to show him right from wrong, and then you get to a situation like that and you see him doing wrong you just react, because you teach him better than that,” Graham said.
Graham is a single mother of six, and when she received a phone call that local schools were closing early she went to the protests, where she saw rioters throwing bricks at police. That’s when she spotted her oldest son and attempted to get him out of harms way. Toya said she was trying to not only protect her young son, she has 5 other children who also need to be protected.
Graham’s tale is a doleful reminder of the frustrations many single mothers feel when dealing with challenges associated with the care, survival and success of their young sons. Her story galvanized a national debate over how we define our heroes and promote the positive side effects of establishing a strong mentoring relationship: healthy social engagement, effective communication skills, improved academic performance and lifelong community service.
Toya Graham’s controversial stand to eject her son from a volatile situation may have spared his life. But there are other young men in the line of fire looking for more than a lifeline. They’re counting on the love and sacrifice of mentors to inspire and help lift them over life’s ever present hurdles.
