Battle of Balls Bluff exhibit at Balch Library through October

A new exhibit, “Faces of Ball’s Bluff,” is on display at Thomas Balch Library during the month of October. It commemorates the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Ball’s Bluff. Battlefield relics, personal artifacts, and images are a part of the display.

This display was assembled to commemorate the 163rd anniversary of the Battle of Ball’s Bluff. Its sole intention is to place a human face to the carnage that occurred here, just outside the Town of Leesburg. These stories are being told through battlefield relics, personal artifacts, and images left behind by men who sacrificed so much.

Much of the display is from the collection of Ken Fleming, an avid student of Civil War history and collector of all things Balls Bluff since the age of nine. An eighth generation Loudoun County Virginian, his great grand father fought with the 8th Virginia Infantry and helped capture the two Union mountain howitzers used during the Battle of Ball’s Bluff. Ken has received several history awards for his work and extensive research, with several of his articles now in publication.

The exhibit is viewable during the library’s operating hours which are Monday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, please call 703-737-7195 or email balchlib@leesburgva.gov.
